What is 1% For the Planet?

Oregon Parks Forever has recently become an environmental partner at 1% For the Planet. We were nominated by Fort George Brewery, a business member of 1%. Read more about their sustainability and community work here.

When two longtime friends and successful businessmen went on a fishing trip in 2001, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, realized that businesses are responsible for their environmental impact, they pledged to donate 1% of their annual sales to environmental organizations. In 2002, they created 1% For the Planet to encourage other companies.

The idea was simple: because companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they should protect those resources.

To date, 1% For the Planet has certified over $585 million in donations to environmental causes. More than 5,200 business members and 6,700 environmental partners have joined from around the globe. 1% For the Planet provides businesses with expertise in environmental giving, credibility consumers trust, and the accountability to follow through. Each year, businesses give 1% of their annual sales directly to vetted environmental partners.

  1. Oregon Parks Forever is a good partner for the businesses participating in For The Planet. OPF supplements good Oregon State Park management. And because residents & visitors to the region are so outdoor focused, park use is very heavy. I have stayed at many campgrounds throughout the country, & it’s shocking how little recycling is done, for example. Businesses, non-profits & government collaboration can make a real difference in how environmentally healthy our public, heavily used outdoor spaces are.
